Know your rights.....
THe law songcruising down the road
singing to my self, going to my home and not thinking nothing else lights go on, flashing blue and loud going 20 over and the freaking fuck out pull to the side and cursing to my self thinking of my right and saying them out load Im technically detained I cant leave now all they need is some suspicion and they can search my car now They think to themselves he might have drugs he might have guns or he might be on the run the run but then they get to the window see me sitting in my seat don't see nothing wrong so just give me my big ticket I head on homed and pass the hell out been a long long day and just done now the next day I wake to knocking on my door I light my cigarette and get on walking open the door and see the man in blue, he says you alright and there there been a robbery or two I say how I am fine and i see something in his eyes is that just a cigaret as he points at me I say yes it is, yes it is indeed, he say he thinks it smell a little funny may I come inside, I think I need to see hell no sir you how no permission from me you need to have a warrant, you need to have it now unless I gave you my permission which I did not, not one bit its is my 4th amendment right, go to a judge give them probable cause and go and get your warrant now these are examples of our law system now know your right or you might be wrongfully charged they need to have a warrant on private grounds, unless your house is on fire or they have there probable cause but when you are in your car, some rights are gone all they need is probable suspicion they can search your car with out a warrant or a judge, so watch out now and know your rights before you go. |
This miniature project was about us young adults learning about the law and what rights police officers have before going into the world. We did this by learning about reasonable suspicion and probable cause, and re looked at the first, forth, and fifth amendment. the last thing we learned about is all of the exceptions to these amendments like terry stops and other exemptions that change how these rights apply. After learning these concepts we had to create a project in a style of our choosing.
For my project I wrote a song because I am in a band and have been trying to write my own songs for a while now. I figured i could do it for this project because it would be fun, interesting, and I could tell people information subtly. My song is about being in a car and being at your house and how your rights change so much when in those two different environments. Also in my song I talk about how you should know your rights or else you could get into some serious trouble. I wrote about those because they are easy to bend if a police officer wants to. He just needs to say he smelled something or saw something and he can search your car. While at your house its so much more private. If I was to explore one aspect of this subject I would probably explore a lot of cases that are both corrupt and justified to view the ups and downs of the exceptions. This is because these exceptions could be for good but also make it easy for police to bend the rules. Being in Durango we don't see this very often. However, there are places that have this problem such as New York and other high crime areas. Also there is just so much controversy on some of the cases which would be interesting to learn about. to edit. |

Pushing the BOUNDARIES of free speech
For this project are class was separated in groups of our choice and we had a week to create a educational video on at least one part the first amendment. During this week we were not required to come to class because we did not have the resources to create our video. My group decide to focus on the main idea of the first amendment, the right to free speech. We made a video about a man walking along and seeing a protester with very offensive signs. After going to a lawyer he figures out why the signs are protected by the first amendment. I am very proud about the project because it turned out so well and I got to really show how the first amendment can be used to express unpopular ideas.
