Sky High off roading
For my LINK project, I am interning at a 4x4 mechanics shop in Crested Butte, Colorado called Sky High Off Roading. While I am there, I will be working on cars that go through the shop that need repair or fabrication. This would entail anything from oil changes to full on fabrication. They work with mostly off roading trucks, cars, or any 4x4 car.
My mentor will be Eric Henke, my sister’s boyfriend. He is one of the mechanics at the shop that his friend Earl owns. I hope he can teach me more about cars and trucks. I also hope that by the end of my internship, I will be able to do more mechanical things on my truck so I can repair it when it breaks it or so I can upgrade it. My goal for this internship is to get more into cars and to be able to restore a truck this summer and make some money from doing that. I am really interested in mechanics and this is a great opportunity to learn more about it.
My main project while I am there is to assist on a big rock crawler fabrication that they are currently doing. This will support their business while I am there because they will have an extra set of hands to work on the rock crawler. I can be that that guy who does the simple things. I hope during this project that I all be able to learn how to weld because I want to be able to fabricate some things my self. If I can learn to weld, it will be a great skill to have for my future.
The skills I need to know will be learned there. I know how to generally work on cars and trucks, but when it comes to the work I will be doing there, I need to just listen well and pay attention. To complete the project, I will need to be doing what they tell me and not screw up. I will not mess up if I pay attention and I will make sure that I take time completing what I do to avoid making a mistake.
I have not had too many obstacles setting up my internship. At first, I wanted to intern at a dirt bike shop but no opportunities came up. Even though working at the truck shop in Crested Butte was my fallback plan, I am glad I'm working on there and get to learn more about cars. I already know about dirt bikes and I need to learn more about cars so I can work on my own truck myself. I am excited for my internship. I am not worried because Eric and I get along fine and he is an awesome guy. Also, from what I hear from my sister, I will get along with all of his friends, his boss and co-workers perfectly.
